[stag] Has anyone overhauled their AC unit behind the dash?

The stag I'm trying to bring back to life was fitted with AC but one of the
heater blower motors (right hand one) was missing. I managed to get one from
a junk yard many moons back, but had to bend a few thing on the heater to get
it off the heater body. Now I'm trying to put the motor in the hole, but can't
for the life of me get it in without bending a few things. Do I need to
separate the fan from the motor body, insert the motor from the front and re
attached the fan from behind?

Sujit,
do not remove the fan. You can get the blower motor assembly in place it just takes a bit of time. You may have to move some if the wiring and controls out of the way but if you put the fan blades in first and have the motor tillted to the right hand side you can turn the motor around into the housing. Oh I forgot to mention you will most likely be upside down or twisted around the door but it can be done, I did mine about a year ago the left one I think that another story.

cheers Stuart

I pulled the entire heater core fan unit during my restoration. I put 20
hours of work just into that unit (not including remove and refit time). If
you have the time it is worth the effort. You'll find decades of crap inside
the blower housing which adds a bit of 'character' to the smell coming from
the vents. There is also a plastic drip
tray that is supposed to catch condensate and route out of a plastic tube in
the trans tunnel. It is on the 'front' of the unit made out of probably
bakelite (brittle). Mine had several cracks that I filled with epoxy resin.
In fact I skinned the entire inside of it so that it has a rubber type bladder
to prevent future leaks. If yours leaks it will end up wet behin the dash and
invite rust. Fortunately the AC in my car was removed along with the engine so
no rust ensued. You'll also find numerous foam seals that will be perished
resulting in less than optimal performance.
