[stag] A question regarding cars fitted with AC
May 08, 2012 06:40PM
My car is fitted with the combo AC/heater unit. The AC does
not work, but the
vacuum pipes feeding the control mechanism do work. Is there
a way to modify
the vacuum setup so that I get hot air to come out of the front
center vents?
I only feel cold /fresh air from the center vents which Ibm
assuming is the
expected behavior for cars fitted with AC.

For the vacuum activated heater
valve on the bulk-head, is the
valve closed when no vacuum is present or open?

Not really. Here's a diagram that shows what's inside

[docs.google.com]

Easiest way I can think of would be to route hot water through the AC coil.

The valve closes when no vacuum.

Thanks Randall.
The coils are in two separate locations. I suppose in modern
cars they are placed back-to-back so you can actually adjust the temperature.
Not sure I like the ideal of running hot water through the AC coil.
Oh well!
Just a thought. At least the feet keep nice and toastie.

The Stag setup allows the temperature to be adjusted, it just doesn't do it
by both heating and cooling the air. Instead it throttles the water flow
through the heating coil to control the heat, and cycles the compressor to
control the AC. A fairly typical setup in the 70s as I recall. Before
that, they tended to be two totally separate units, where the AC would only
recirculate air within the cabin.

And FWIW, my (relatively) modern car does somewhat the same thing, directing
hot air to the floor and cold air to the dash (whichever is called for by
the climate control). There is an override, but the default is heat down,
cold up. However, it does both cool and heat the air (which has the effect
of dehumidifying it).

Hi Sujit,

From memory the Triumph system deliberately doesn't heat the centre vent - a safety feature of the time. It's to prevent the driver becoming drowsy by blowing warm air at your face. I imagine that could be a problem in the saloons but agree that some warm air would be nice on the face in an open top car ! The eyeball vents should have a nice amount of warm air available though...
