Hi Ken

I have had Greenstuff pads in my car for 10 years - on my second set and think
that they are brilliant. They do leave a bit of dust after hard usage, but
that is easy enough to clean off.

Cheers

Subject: [stag] Brake question/ main bearings

Hi Guys!!

Finally got heads off Stag block, but needs hell of a clean up due to the
swarf and crap created by destruction of heads during removal (they were
corroded beyond help anyway but block survived), so will be a while before
that block is in the car - may just put new crank and bearings in the existing
one for now, for the amount of driving round I do........needed +20 thou
bearings and could only get county's - (grrr) - wanted vandervell or AE, but
couldn't find any, so may have to use the county's.....unless anyone knows
where I can get the old "real" (AE/Vandervell) ones, as would prefer that -
whichever block I use, I'll still use the 20 thou crank, so need them either
way.....

I have a brake question - have been toying with the idea of a brake upgrade
for a while. Being a pensioner (!!) Can't justify the millions people want
for the 4 pot upgrades. Someone here in Aust has put Rover SD1 4 pots in to a
2000 sedan but it's a bit of a pain with a fair bit of modification. These 4
pots only increase the piston area by about 5%, but the pads are about 35%
bigger.

My question to you guys is - how much difference do the "green stuff" pads
make? Some "high performance" pads are actually worse when cold, but are
better when really hot - I don't thrash the Stag enough to get the benefit
from a "when really hot" pad (and could probably get that advantage by just
removing the stone shields to allow some air to circulate), but would be
happier if they were a bit more responsive when I've got new cars pulling out
in front of me then jumping on the anchors.

Any thoughts/experience appreciated, as they aren't that expensive, and may be
worth a try.

Thanks guys.

What would be the main advantage of the green pads.
Do they perhaps last longer or wear disks less quickly?

Hi David

To split the 2 subjects.............

Vandervell was OE specified by Triumph and having a dark grey appearance (lead
flash) were to be used with the 'soft' crankshaft. Glacier came along at a
later date (and bought Vandervell too) producing a 'white' bearing which was
at that time cheaper but primarily intended to be used with tuftrided cranks.
I'm not aware whether Glacier even exist any more, and I can't be stuffed to
'Google' it.

We all know just how very well 'County' source their parts, the trade
discounts they offer and the huge size of their Quality Control department.

Whenever buying parts, quality check them very carefully yourself and if in
any doubt whatsoever, return them to your supplier. In this case the physical
things you would be looking for include signs of bearing surface lift or
bubbling, incorrect curvature, alignment of locating pips and oilways, and
that the bore size is correct for your crank.
