The car goes off to the body shop this week.

I will continue with Stuart's recommendation of BS381 -631 Light Grey. The
inside of the air cleaners are not painted. The spot of original paint was on
the underside of bottom shell of the air cleaner. I masked it off several
years ago with the intent of getting the right paint on it some day. I can
now attack from Stuart's recommendation and from the computer matching at the
paint supply house.

The cam covers scare me. I don't have any original paint to reference. I had
them dipped. They are cleaner than the day they came out of the stamping die.
This one is going to be more of a challenge.

Tamara and I are planning to drive the Stag to Colorado in August.

BTW it wasn't a little doe by any means.

Hi Pat,

How are the repairs coming along? Cost you a little doe? winking smiley
Driving out to VTR 2011 in Breckenridge Colorado this August?

I know this discussion has come up at least a dozen time sin the last 15 years
on the lists, and I do nto recall there was ever a determination.

I do know that I have seen so-called "original" Triumph Stags" with the "sort
of" battleship gray with a slight tint of green air cleaner and semi gloss
black cam covers, others with silver gray semi gloss cam covers.

Exact paint colors by mix? Well it is not aluminum color on the cam covers,
that is for sure, there is more gray in there.

I will bet the colors were not consistent right from the factory from year to
year from early to 1st sanction to 4th sanction.

I am thinking polish up some spots that you know are stock, or maybe the
interior of the air cleaner and have a body shop put the color matching
analyzer on it to see what you come up with.

Let us know what you find out!

Hi Patrick

Air Cleaner
The original colour was 'Oxford Grey' gloss cellulose. Not surprisingly this
was a Morris colour - but this was also used in many corners of the British
Leyland Empire when they didn't need a high temperature/chrome finish.

Cam Covers
This was merely specified as 'aluminium paint' and being sprayed, was almost
certainly cellulose-based. General purpose spraying aluminium paint can still
be purchased from many stores, being used as priming undercoat prior to
top-coating garden gates. My own cam covers are still original (maybe the
last?) and it is still just about possible to believe there is some metallic
element in the paint by looking at it through a magnifying glass, but this is
very faint indeed and a far cry from today's super-mica metallics.

Pat,

Here are a few pics of my car. Air cleaner is original ... mostly worn off. Its more "greenish" per Glenn's note. The cam covers are more silver. Looks like 1 repaint but the original paint is visible is spots. You are welcome to come look at the car in Ann Arbor if needed. Once the snow slush sleet slop is gone I could drive the car to meet you.
