Noise from Torque Converter
November 27, 2006 01:47PM
I'm getting a strange noise that seems to be coming from the torque
converter. Is sounds like a washing machine on spin cycle. If I turn the
wheel sharply to the left it gets worse then if I turn it to the right
(while moving). The transmission seems to be working fine. I originally
though it had to be the PS pump but I removed the PS pump belt and the noise
was still there. I put the Stag on my lift and left it running and found
that the noise seemed to be coming from the vent area on the bell housing.
I can see the torque converter spinning through the vent hole and the noise
seems to be coming out of that area. Any advise?

Thanks,
Bruce Harding

The left right difference suggests the pick up in the oil pan is not getting
enough oil on turn left i.e when the fluid swishes to the right.
Have you checked the level of the fluid recently and what colour is it?
If it is not the fluid level it still sounds like something not getting
lubrication.
I think I am worrying about this. The transmission may give the effect of
working OK but it may be about to seize.
Hopefully someone else knows exactly what it is and its easy to fix.
Im not sure if you are in UK but why not try asking a transmission
specialist like [www.jpat.co.uk]

I would guess transmission oil pump is squeeling. Does it do to whilst stood? Pump is mounted at the front of the box around the input shaft. I would check condition and level of fluid first though.

If the fluid level is good then the next easy step would be to drop the sump and remove and clean the fluid filter (fine steel mesh). If the filter is cloged, it will cause the hydraulic pump to cavitate and/or suck air in and make funny noises.
