Petrol Tank overflow pipe

Yesterday I parked my Stag on a friends nice new Tarmac drive, which was on a slight slope. After moving off we were shocked to see damage caused by a petrol leak, the petrol had done a good job of dissolving the tar. Its going to cost me a fair bit to put it right.

Today I looked for any obvious petrol leaks and can't find any, but I did find the overflow petrol pipe dangling loose in the boot and disconnected. Any petrol over-flowing when filling would have been deposited onto the boot floor and out via the boot drain-holes. But I am sure I have not over-filled or dripped petrol down it myself.

Would petrol go out through the overflow on tight bends etc? Any suggestions on where else I should check?

Its a brand new tank recently fitted, so I don't think it is that.

Thanks

I'd suspect to find a strong smell of petrol in the boot if the overflow is your problem. I sprung a petrol leak recently underneath and it turned out to be a perished bit of rubber hose that connects the metal fuel pipe from the tank to the rigid plastic pipe that goes into the engine bay. It's located underneath the bulkhead alongside the bell housing. My leak was only evident with the engine running, but produced quite a puddle on the floor. Because of it's located, access is not easy - you'll probably need to get it up on ramps to replace it and fit the clips.

I'm not sure how UK Stag tanks are vented, but I can vouch that fuel will
slosh a long way in corners. When I got my Stag, the seal in the filler was
missing, with the result that it would slosh fuel out the filler in left
turns. I also discovered that the clip that holds the rubber elbow to the
downpipe was loose, which allowed fuel to run into the boot when filling the
tank.

There are two places it can leak out of the car at the back.
The tank drain hole, but that is a bit uphill from the lowest point in the
boot. If the drive sloped so the front of the car was high it could leak out
of that drain hole. If that is the case there is a constant pool of petrol
in the boot.
The other place is via the overflow to the filler neck when the tank is
completely filled. That would drip out near to the rear wheel. However you
said that was off so the damaged tarmac must have been under the drain plug
hole

One of the points to look at is the tanged ring holding the fuel sender in
place. If it is not tight, a full tank will cause fuel to leak past. If the
tank is new it is possible this has not been tightened enough.
However also on the new tank situation, it is also possible a connection to
the new tank somewhere is not good.
Most of this points to strong smell of petrol all the time in the boot or
some of the time.
The last point to consider is the new tank. Is it s second hand tank that
may have pinholes or a brand new tank and does the brand new tank leak? For
starters lift the boot boards out and the spare wheel and check the furthest
forward part of the boot floor for wetness.
